Prepare to Kiss That Turkey Neck Goodbye

Rochester Hills, MI – Individuals who are self-conscious of their “turkey necks” can now rejoice. A highly-decorated plastic surgeon in Rochester Hills, Michigan has the sagging neck solutions they have all been searching for.

“I have patients come into my practice all the time looking to tighten their sagging necks,” says Plastic Surgeon Dr. M Azhar Ali, who operates AMAE Plastic Surgery Center. He adds, “Luckily for them, there are quite a few solutions that we offer.”

Millions of Americans suffer from an unflattering neck area. This wrinkled or sagging skin can cause a person to look much older than his or her chronological age. It can also give off the appearance of being heavy, even if the person is of average weight.

Just because a person has sagging skin around the neck does not mean he or she has to live with it, however.

Dr. Ali says that with just one or more cosmetic procedures, a person can learn to be proud of their neck instead of constantly hiding it from the world.

What Causes Turkey Neck?

In some cases, turkey neck can be caused by significant weight loss. The fat may have disappeared, but the skin no longer has the elasticity to shrink back into place.

In other cases, the condition is hereditary. If one or both parents suffered from a sagging, wrinkled neck, chances are their offspring will too.

The condition can also be a product of age. Unfortunately, the neck is the one area that gives away how old we look, despite the appearance of the rest of our body.

No matter what caused the excess and/or sagging skin to form around the neck area, there are some practical solutions. Most of them involve minimally invasive surgery and short recovery times, which is great news. The patient could be back to work in short order looking and feeling more confident and self-assured.

Here are the procedures that have helped others say goodbye to their turkey necks for good.

Neck Contouring

This is a surgical technique that produces a slimmer, smoother neckline. In some cases, the procedure is combined with others that also shape the chin and tighten the skin on the face.

Here are the procedures that are typically performed during a neck contouring operation.

Neck Liposuction

For patients that suffer from an unsightly double chin even though they are not overweight, Dr. Ali recommends this simple procedure.

Neck Liposuction removes the excess fat, thus slimming the neckline. Dr. Ali recommends this procedure for younger patients (20’s to 50’s) whose skin still retains a certain amount of elasticity.

When skin has lost its elasticity, neck liposuction, unfortunately, won’t do much good. The idea is to have the skin contract evenly after the surgery is complete. Otherwise, the skin around the neck will merely sag, and the patient will be back to square one.

The good news is that this procedure is a quick one. Using nothing more than a local anesthetic, the cosmetic surgeon will make one or two tiny incisions (usually concealed under the chin or behind the ears) whereby the excess fat is removed.

The patient will then wear a supportive chin strap for a few days and be back to work within a week in most cases (returning to full activity within the span of two weeks).

The result is a newly refined jawline and a naturally contoured chin and neck.

Neck Lift

Patients that don’t have excess neck fat, but still experience sag, may benefit from neck lift surgery.

There are essentially two types of neck lifts. Cervicoplasty is the procedure that is used to remove the excess skin around the neck. Platysmaplasty will tighten loose neck muscles.

In some cases, the plastic surgeon will perform both procedures for a more defined neck area.

Unlike neck liposuction, neck lifts are performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. A small incision is placed behind each ear. If the case warrants it, a third incision may be placed under the chin.

It is through these cuts that the cosmetic surgeon will tighten the neck muscles and remove the excess skin.

Recovering from a neck lift depends on the patient’s state of health and the extent of the procedure. In most cases, the individual will be able to return to work within two weeks.

It is common for the person to feel tightness in the neck area post-surgery and bruising and swelling may also occur. These symptoms are normal and will diminish with time.

When the patient does fully recover, he or she will be able to look in the mirror and enjoy a smoother neck without all the wrinkles and creases.

“This tends to boost the person’s self-esteem considerably,” says Dr. Ali.

Have Realistic Expectations

While these neck contouring procedures can help patients look years younger and more attractive, they are not anti-aging cures. No amount of surgery can stop the aging process, but aging can be slowed by choosing a qualified cosmetic surgeon.

For individuals who are thinking about one or more operations for what is commonly known as “turkey neck”, or for other parts of the body, such as the face, chin, and nose, be aware that these procedures can be combined with others to improve one’s appearance and self-esteem.

What Causes a Doublie Chin?

Bloomfield Hills, MI – When you look in the mirror, are you embarrassed by what looks like a double chin? Do you try to find ways to hide it in pictures? Before discussing how to get rid of your double chin, it’s important to understand what causes it.

“While a double chin may make your face look heavier, a double chin isn’t an indication that you are fat,” says Dr. Ali, a Bloomfield Hills plastic surgeon. “Gaining weight doesn’t always mean you’ll get a double chin, and likewise, losing weight doesn’t necessarily mean your double chin will go away. Weight gain can lead to the appearance of a double chin, but there are other factors, as well.”

A double chin is caused when excess fat and loose skin gather in the neck area, leading to the appearance of a fuller, almost second chin.

Aging can lead to the onset of a double chin. Our muscles weaken as we age, which allows for the fat deposits to hang lower than they otherwise would.

For some people, their double chin is simply the result of their genetics, and therefore almost impossible to avoid. And some people just may have more fat cells in their chin region, causing a double chin even though they may be younger and on the slimmer side.

The way your bones and muscles form can also lead to the appearance of a double chin, along with facial expressions we make. Some facial movements can actually lead to structural changes in our appearance over time, leading to the appearance of a double chin.

But if you are embarrassed by your double chin, there are great ways to minimize the appearance and bring your face to proper proportions.

Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures, and can be a great way to remove the appearance of a double chin, if you don’t also have excess skin involved. Because the neck doesn’t really respond to exercise, no amount of dieting or working out may be able to remove those stubborn fat deposits of the double chin.

Liposuction can be used to remove the excess fat deposits, and contour the chin to provide the patient the desired look.

If your double chin is accompanied by sagging, loose skin and/or thick neck bands, a neck lift will be a better option for you.

Incisions will be placed under the chin and around the ears. The excess skin will be removed, and liposuction can also be used to remove the fatty deposits. Dr. Ali will tighten the neck muscles to ensure the most beautiful and natural looking result.

“Neck lifts are a wonderful way to get rid of double chins, and provide patients with the look they want,” says Dr. Ali. “The patient will be on bedrest for about 2 days following the procedure, and will have a bit of swelling and bruising in the first week. But by six weeks out, normal activities can be resumed, and patients love to show off their news, slimmer looking neck.”

If you have a stubborn double chin that you’d like to get rid of, schedule a consultation with Dr. Ali today.

Could a Neck Lift Help Me Look Younger?

With the winter weather upon us, now is a good time to consider cosmetic surgery, as many activities are indoors and layers of clothing are common. Once the spring arrives with its warmer weather, you will be ready to show off the New You!

If you have been thinking you would like to turn back the hands of time, but are not ready to commit to a full face lift, a neck lift procedure may be right for you. The neck is one of the most pronounced areas of the body where sagging skin, sagging jowls, double chins and muscle banding is noticeable. Many women and men are in general still happy with the appearance of their face, but their neck area is in need of tightening and smoothing. Re-sculpting the neck and the jawline can help present a considerably more youthful appearance .

Good candidates for a neck lift, also called a rhytidectomy, are individuals with good overall health, who are non-smokers, and who have a generally positive outlook. Realistic expectations for the outcome of the surgery are also important. As with any procedure, a neck lift will not save a failing relationship or correct other personal problems.

A neck lift procedure involves fewer incisions than a full face lift, however it is still surgery, performed under anesthesia, and a period of recovery is to be expected. A bandage may be placed around your face to provide compression and reduce the chance of swelling and bruising, and a thin tube may be needed to drain excess fluid that may collect under the skin. Swelling and bruising will usually subside within one to two weeks.

You will schedule a consultation in advance of the procedure, and all of your questions will be addressed by your Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. Dr. Ali prides himself on his compassion and the individualized care he and his staff provide to each patient. If you have been bothered by the changes in the appearance of your neck, contact Dr. Ali today to learn more about the restorative neck lift procedure.

Trends in Cosmetic Surgery – The Later In Life Lift

One of the most recent trends in cosmetic surgery is treating patients who are approaching their golden years.  While this demographic isn’t new, the increase in patients considering cosmetic surgery is!  As baby boomers approach retirement, they are choosing to enter it with their best foot forward.  From 2012 to 2013, the number of elective procedures jumped 4% in the 55+ age group.

While nose reshaping is a popular cosmetic procedure across the board, the over 55 crowd tends to lean more towards facial procedures including lifts, forehead lifts, ear reshaping and hair transplants. Regardless of the procedure, the most common reason was that they finally have time to focus on themselves.
