Liposuction Surgery

Your Liposuction Questions Answered

Bloomfield Hills, MI – Thinking about liposuction, but you want to learn more about it first? You’ve come to the right place.

Here are the answers to your most important liposuction questions from one of Michigan’s top plastic surgeons, Dr. M. Azhar Ali.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction, one of the most common plastic surgery procedures, improves the contours of your body by removing excess fat deposits that exist between your skin and the muscle underneath. Oftentimes this is fat that has become resistant to diet and exercise.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

In most cases, patients opt to have liposuction on their abdomen, hips, thighs (anterior, outer and inner), breasts, buttocks, arms, knees, and neck.

Is Liposuction Only for Women?

Certainly not. Men make up about 15-25% of all liposuction patients. When men opt to have the procedure, they usually target their abdomens, love handles (flanks), and breasts, but the chin and neck are also sometimes included.

How Many Office Visits Are Required?

If you are having a single area worked on, such as your arms, your plastic surgeon will attempt to complete the procedure in a single session.

However, your plastic surgeon will sometimes recommend that you come back for additional liposuction sections, particularly if you are having more than one area worked on at the same time. Your plastic surgeon will determine if more sessions are necessary by calculating your height and weight and by gauging your overall health.

What is the Recovery Like?

Immediately following surgery, your plastic surgeon will probably require you to wear an elastic compression garment. Think of it as a type of specially made girdle. You will wear this elastic piece to reduce any bleeding that may occur immediately following surgery, as well as to reduce any swelling.

If local anesthesia was used, you will be able to leave the facility about 30 minutes following the procedure. If your plastic surgeon used general anesthesia or IV sedation, you may need an hour or more to fully recover before you are discharged. You should be able to return to work within a couple days’ time.

Are the Results Permanent?

Any fat cells that your plastic surgeon removes during surgery will not grow back. That means that you will have a new body shape after you recover from the procedure.

There will still be fat cells present, and these may be susceptible to weight gain. Your plastic surgeon can provide you with tips to help you manage your weight, which can extend your positive results.

If you happen to gain weight following liposuction surgery, you will appear to be a larger version of your new body shape.

Will I Be Left with Loose Skin?

If your skin has good elasticity, you should be left with smooth and naturally looking skin following liposuction.

If you have excess skin following the procedure, you may want to opt for a tummy tuck instead of liposuction. Your plastic surgeon will determine which procedure you are a good candidate for following your initial consultation.

Are There Any Risks?

Liposuction is a very safe procedure. However, as with any surgical procedure, infection, bleeding, and nerve injury can occur.

The only time liposuction may be risky if is you attempt to do too much liposuction in a single day. Or if you do not follow your plastic surgeon’s advice following surgery.

Listen to your plastic surgeon’s suggestions, in other words, and your procedure will have favorable results like they do for the majority of patients who opt for this procedure worldwide.

How Much Does Liposuction Cost?

The fees you are required to pay may vary depending on how many areas you wish to treat. Treating one area, such as your abdomen, is less expensive than treating your abdomen, arms, and thighs.
