Brazilian Butt Lifts vs. Butt Implants vs. Sculptra –
Many women come to Bloomfield Hills area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali wishing they had a rounder, fuller or more shapely buttocks – but are not quite sure of their options. There are three main procedures currently available for butt “augmentation”: (1.) Fat grafting (‘Brazilian Butt-Lift’); (2.) Surgical butt implants; and, (3.) Buttocks fillers such as Sculptra.
In this article double board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali explains discusses the pros and cons of these three procedures.
Brazilian Butt Lift
A Brazilian Butt Lift is a procedure that transfers a patient’s own fat cells (usually from the abdomen, “love handles,” back or thigh) to their behind area. A skilled plastic surgeon effectively “sculpts” the body by removing fat from unwanted areas (using liposuctions) – and re-injecting that fat into the buttocks to plump and round it out.
Because the body’s own fat is used to “fill” the buttocks, the procedure is 100% natural. And because the entire fat cells (and not just the fat itself) are transferred into the buttocks, a Brazilian Butt Lift lasts. With a Brazilian Butt Lift patients typically have as much fullness in their behind 10 years after surgery as they have at the 6 month mark.
Additionally, Brazilian Butt Lift uses liposuction to remove fat from the abdomen, hips, waist, back and thighs. So this procedure plumps your backside while trimming down unwanted body fat in other areas!
A Butt Implant procedure uses a silicone implant that is surgically inserted into the butt to give it a fuller and more rounded look.
Buttock implants are more limited because they only deliver volume to one specific area of the behind –and cannot be sculpted and contoured like a Brazilian Butt Lift to custom shape the buttocks.
Buttocks implants also tend to feel less natural than when the body’s own fat is used. Additionally, because a buttock implant requires surgery and an incision there is more potential for complications such as infection, capsular contracture (scar tissue formation), and wound healing problems at the incision site. Butt implants can also become displaced or cause, sagging over time.
For these reasons, butt implants are generally not preferred by most board certified plastic surgeons for use in buttock augmentation.
Sculptra is a filler that is injected into the buttocks that triggers an inflammatory response in your body -which creates a combination of scar tissue and fresh collagen. Basically, Scupltra induces your body to grow its own collagen around the product.
The biggest downside to Scupltra is that the results are very subtle – and the plumpness fades over time.
Additionally, there is a fairly high incidence of unwanted lumps and bumps with Sculptra. Some studies suggests as many as 8 to 10 percent of women end up with bumpy injections. When that happens, the patient is then stuck with a bumpy behind for a few years – or faced with the alternative of having surgery to cut the lumpy areas out.
Also – unlike a Brazilian Butt Lift which is “one and done”, Sculptra generally requires a few sessions to get the full effect. typically a patient requirtes three or four sessions spaced every two or three months.
