Why Mommy Makeover Popularity is on the Rise (Part 2) –

In recent years, surgical procedures that aim to return a woman’s body to its pre-pregnancy state (popularly called “mommy makeovers”) have enjoyed a surge in popularity.  In this 2 part article Macomb County mommy makeover expert Dr. Ali explain some reasons for the recent dramatic increase in mommy makeovers.

Types of Mommy Makeovers

Typically, a mommy makeover is a combination of abdominoplasty (aka “tummy tuck”) with some form of breast surgery. But as the body’s specific needs vary greatly from woman to woman, there are a great many variations available within the basic mommy makeover framework. A mommy makeover can be customized to each woman’s unique appearance needs and goals.

Variations on the tummy tuck include the mini tuck, the full tuck, and the skin-only tuck (which involves the removal of stretch-marked skin without tightening or repairing the abdominal muscles.)

Breast surgeries associated with mommy makeovers include breast lifts, augmentation (breast implants) and breast reduction, with some mommy makeover patients receiving a hybrid of these surgeries.

Additionally, the concept of the mommy makeover has taken on a slightly broader definition in recent years, with many mommy makeovers also including vaginal rejuvenation, Botox, fillers, liposuction, and even fat injections to the buttocks.

Mommy Makeovers are Popular among Younger Moms

Mommy makeovers used to be reserved for more mature women. However, in a surprising statistic, most women who undergo mommy makeovers are now millennials, with the majority of mommy makeover patients being under the age of 35.

As the elasticity of one’s skin plays a major factor in the results of a mommy makeover, younger moms are ideal mommy makeover candidates. And the younger the patients, typically, the less invasive the surgery she will need and the faster she will recover.

That said, it is still important to give one’s body an appropriate time to recover from pregnancy before subjecting oneself to a mommy makeover. Macomb County Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Ali recommends that new mothers wait to have their mommy makeover until six months after their pregnancy and, if breastfeeding, another six weeks after weaning. Not only does this allow adequate time for the uterus to contract and for breast tissue to shrink, but is usually a sufficient period during which new moms can recover from the mental and emotional stresses of pregnancy, before embarking on such a crucial life decision.

Behind the Mommy Makeover’s Increased Popularity

Social media has helped bring the many benefits of mommy makeovers to the cultural forefront, with both surgeons and patients alike sharing their mommy makeover experiences online. Additionally, recent advancements in the field of cosmetic surgery have made the procedures included in a mommy makeover safer and easier than ever, with patients enjoying recoveries that are both more rapid and less physically taxing.

Advancements in Mommy Makeovers

Recent developments in anesthesia (numbing agents) have also played a major role in the recovery process of mommy makeover patients. Long-lasting numbing agents like Exparel, which is injected into the surgical sight, are able to significantly diminish most of a patient’s pain for a period of up to three days. The patient’s lowered discomfort is able to help kickstart their recovery, as well as avoid the adverse side effects that come along with treating pain with opioids.

Additionally, recent surgical advancements have made recovering from abdominoplasties significantly less reliant on surgical drains, which were once simply an uncomfortable-but-accepted reality of getting a tummy tuck. New surgical techniques such as progressive tension sutures -internal stitches that reduce the buildup of fluid in the surgical area- as well as compression garments and tissue glues, allow for Board Certified Surgeon Dr. Ali to offer Macomb County area patients’ tummy tucks without uncomfortable surgical drains for some patients.

And sometimes, it’s the little things that make the recent difference. While it is standard protocol to abstain from eating or drinking anything after midnight leading up to surgery, recent data shows decreased postoperative pain and faster recoveries in mommy makeover patients who combined certain anti-inflammatory medicines with drinking Gatorade the night before their procedure.

Noninvasive Mommy Makeover Procedures

Clinical evidence also shows eased surgical aftermath in patients who underwent noninvasive fat-reduction procedures in the months prior to their mommy makeover. Suitable candidates can undergo CoolSculpting, a noninvasive alternative to liposuction, to remove fat from areas resistant to exercise.

Additionally, in some cases, personalized exercise and nutrition plans can be implemented to restore muscle tone, minimizing the need for muscle-tightening during a mommy makeover, with patients instead simply needing a “skin-only tuck.”

Reduced Mommy Makeover Downtime

As every individual mommy makeover is different, the amount of downtime following the procedure varies from case to case. Many mommy makeover patients recover within a period of only one or two weeks (during which childcare is essential) thanks to the latest advancements in surgical procedures.

The number of procedures included in the makeover, as well as each individual procedure’s complexity, will all factor into the length of the recovery.

Board Certified Surgeon Dr. Ali works closely with all Macomb County mommy makeover patients to make sure they are provided with everything they need for a swift and comfortable recover – making the decision to obtain a mommy makeover easier than ever.
